Born around mid July 2020 these two Merel babies are the best looking ones we’ve seen so far. They appear to be brother and sister, the sister is the taller looking one in the photo. She seems slightly older and smarter. They both are very friendly and come up close to us.
On training day, she helped her mother teach her younger brother to get to safety, to eat, and to bath in the bowl of water. In the afternoon it was just too hot and they were each in a separate bowl of water having a good time, it was very funny to watch. At one point, as the sister stood in a bowl of water she noticed a leaf had gotten in it and plucked it out and threw it away. She likes a clean bowl and water!
One afternoon after dinner we sat on the patio reading our phone/tablets. We looked up and saw the sister about to go into the house. A closer look revealed that she was curiously following an unusual long caterpillar who was heading into the house. The caterpillar turned another direction at the last minute and the sister continued to follow. The caterpillar went off into the garden plants and the sister decided not to eat it. We and the sister Merel were very surprised by the unusual caterpillar visit.
The mother and brother Merel went off to the orchards after training day and the sister spent all afternoon in our garden for 5 days. She played and ate bugs and then rested on top of a Hedgehog hut we set up and also took naps sitting next to a Buddha statue in the garden. After the 5th day she went off to other things in the area but she still visits several times a day for a quick bite or to say hello.
