One night after going to bed we heard a sound coming from the back garden. It was similar to the neighbor moving his trash container around but this was a much stranger sound. The next morning we noticed the water can had been placed blocking our back door. We realized that is where the strange sound must have come from but who moved it? Having seen a hedgehog in the front of the house we figured he must have been there pushing the watering can, maybe trying to get water?
That night, before going to bed, we sat at the garden window and watched to see if the hedgehog returned. He did and he also began pushing the watering can again. It turned out that he was looking for peanut pieces that came from the bird feeder above. The Merel (blackbird) had been throwing a few peanut pieces down to the ground so the hedgehog could eat them. We then decided to set up a bowl every night to be sure that Hoagie the Hedgehog would have something to eat.
Now before going to bed we often sit with Spooky at the garden window waiting for Hoagie to show up.
One morning, as we ate breakfast, it was still a little dark out from the clouds. Hoagie surprised us by showing up with a mate. Currently, we are keeping a look out for Hedgehog babies.
